Course description and content
The course aims to equip students with essential instrumentation skills, providing hands-on practical experience in basic instrumentation techniques, ranging from fundamental electronics and CAD design to 3D printing. Students will build a DIY kit of diagnostic tools to solve complex chemistry problems.

(i) Lectures:
– Basic introduction about the course: hardware, open vs. closed source
– Electronics fundamentals
– CAD (Autodesk Fusion) and 3D printing (Filament and Resin)
– Optical instruments
– Documentation on online repository
– Oral presentations guidance


(ii) Practical Projects/Electronics:
Practical sessions will focus on developing three advanced instrumentation projects using an Arduino kit (e.g., ELEGOO UNO R3):
1. Building a Multimeter: Hands-on experience on soldering technique
2. Automated solution titrator: Focusing on solution preparation at given pH, motorized liquid dispenser, photodiode amplification, and automated data logging via Python.
3. Design using CAD and 3D printing: Students will learn to reproduce a 3D part, fetch designs online, and prepare files for printing using slicer software.

*Note: This is a tentative course outline, and the course might get updated depending on availability of certain instruments and also the students’ interests.

Learning goals
The student should be able to:
– install a new instrument on a computer (via drivers)
– control hardware with code (Arduino and/or Python)
– Actuate a motor (DC and/or stepper motor)
– collect a 3D design online and launch a 3D print using a slicer
– Familiar with basic instruments (power source, power generator, signal generator, oscilloscope, PWM control)


Pre-requisites
No prerequisite is required, but familiarity with basic electronics and CAD (Autodesk Fusion, etc.) will be beneficial for highly motivated students.

Grading:
 – Attendance: 20 %
 – Final Report: 40 %
 – Oral Presentation: 40 %
