The department of Chemistry of ENS-PSL integrates teaching and research. Students of the department have the opportunity to integrate research teams as soon as the first year.
Research is performed in two units: the UMR 8228 CNRS-ENS-SU Chimie Physique et Chimie du Vivant (CPCV) and UMR 8004 CNRS-ENS-ESPCI Institut des MAtériaux Poreux de Paris (IMAP). The research at the Department of chemistry embraces fully the concept of chemistry as a central science. We develop new chemical approaches to manipulate matter at the molecular level for a broad range of topics, covering fields ranging from theoretical and physical chemistry to the chemistry of living matter.
These topics include NMR and mass spectroscopy, theory and artificial intelligence, electrochemistry and photochemistry, new materials, soft matter, synthetic chemistry including peptide synthesis, new molecular probes for biological applications, organ on chips, probing and manipulating cellular state. This research is developed in a total of 14 research teams.
The Department of Chemistry is also a welcoming place with about 200 non permanent members together with about 90 permanent staff. 48 nationalities are represented in the Department of Chemistry.
The department of Chemistry prepares students to the DENS. Training is tightly lin to the research performed at the department with students mixing with researchers as soon as they join the department. This is the opportunity to exchange directly with all members of the department and research projects are proposed already on the second semester.
